Cuba photogrAPHY exhibition
Cuba is a fascinating country not just because of its music, rum and cigars, or because of its health and educational accomplishments. It’s the tenderness of its people’s hearts that makes Cuba a captivating place you always want to return to.
The Cuban people have gone through so much during the past half-century. Their struggle is still alive and you can see it when you walk on the streets. In spite of that depravation, you can also feel a sweet and intoxicating sense of resilience and pride all combined.
Whether you are in old Havana or in the middle of the countryside in Viñales, there are lots of colors everywhere you go. Those colors along with the texture of the crumbling walls and facades are extremely luring to the eyes. But despite the beauty of it all and the eccentricity of the old and vibrant American cars, you are strangely and constantly reminded that the embargo is still going on.
The economic struggle is seen and felt. You notice people carrying eggs as if they were their most precious commodities. Yet, they still walk with their heads up, hopeful that they will - at some point – see the light at the end of the tunnel.
All these images were taken by Lidia Arriagada-Garcia just a few months before Fidel Castro's death. They represent an important moment in time and also they help to visually narrate the current social and economical status of the people of Cuba.
Lidia has been exhibiting these and other photographs of Cuba in several public spaces in New York City, at art gallery in London and several of them were part of an international art exhibition in Prague, Czech Republic.
We are currently holding a free exhibit of the photo works of Cuba at The Bean On Broadway: — Broadway 771, NEW YORK, New York 10003 —
